The Maine State Board for Licensure of Architects, Landscape Architects and Interior Designers was established to protect the public and maintain high professional standards through examination and licensure of persons who wish to practice architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design in the State of Maine.
The Landscape Architect Registration Examination (L.A.R.E.) is unlike any test you have ever taken. It is designed to test your competence to practice landscape architecture. It is not a design competition. As a professional licensing exam, it tests your knowledge, skills, and abilities that directly relate to protecting public health, safety, and welfare.
The LARE is divided into four sections. A candidate for licensure must pass all of them in order to qualify to become licensed. Research shows that candidates who take sections 1 and 2 closer to graduation are more successful than those who wait. For section 4, candidates with several years of experience are more successful. There was no clear determinant of success for Section 3. The bottom line: if you think you are ready and your state allows you to take the exam before meeting the experience requirements, don't hesitate to sign up to take the exam.
Each state sets its own requirements for licensure and the eligibility requirements for taking the LARE. Many states now allow applicants to begin taking the exam after graduation - but not all. Additionally, many states have a rolling 5-year clock for taking the exam, meaning that you must pass all sections within 5 years of taking the first section. It is always advisable to check with the licensure board in the jurisdiction where you wish to become licensed to confirm requirements.
Effective September 02, 2021, Professional Engineer Exam Applicants are no longer required to apply for exam eligibility and may register directly with NCEES to take the PE exam. Applicants may apply for licensure with the APELSCIDLA Board upon passing the exam.

In the United States, most registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit US professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted an eight-year, three-year, or two-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards.
Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) degrees are designed to help you develop a comprehensive knowledge of the discipline of architecture, as well as foundational professional knowledge and a basic understanding of related fields. The NAAB accredited B.Arch. degree at Drexel University is suitable for students who seek to earn a professional undergraduate degree that leads to professional licensure and affords you early exposure to architectural practice. While our B.Arch. degree does NOT participate in Drexel's signature coop program, our students' opportunity to gain professional work experience and complete most or all of their AXP requirements prior to graduation, thus far exceeding the practice exposure of coop. A conventional B.Arch. degree is typically five years long. The 2+4 Option and the PT Evening Option take longer to complete due to the part-time model but allows an accelerated path to professional licensure due to parallel AXP completion and the option to participate in IPAL. 2ff7e9595c
